Catherine Wagner’s “Archaeology: BRICK + GOLD” explores our studio, a historic San Francisco firehouse, through what she calls “archaeology in reverse,” treating construction as both process and metaphor for change. The installation reimagines an exposed brick wall with gold leaf, carved recesses, and light to make meaning of the building’s layered past alongside its present architectural use.

We spoke with Jeff Wheeler, Senior Technical Architect, Ivan Leon Ramirez, and Nate Ingebritson, Designers, about our studio's workshop - lovingly referred to as "the shop" - tracing its origins, its role in the firm’s design process today, and how it may continue to evolve in the future.

Since the launch of our Carbon Budget initiative, we’ve implemented the dashboard on over a dozen projects. In this blog series, we'll deep dive into specific projects, outlining how we're tracking both the predicted operational and embodied carbon emissions as the project progresses, which in turn, will result in more sensitive and resilient designs that emit less carbon.

Earlier this year, we had the pleasure of welcoming Kate Greenberg to our office, where she shared her journey into furniture design and the inspiration behind her amazing work. Based in Oakland, Kate is an artist and designer working across furniture, lighting, and objects. Her work has been featured in The Local Project, Surface Magazine, Dezeen, and Architectural Digest, and has been exhibited in the Bay Area, New York, and Milan. In addition to her practice, she curates Works in Progress—an ongoing exhibition series celebrating the Bay Area’s vibrant craft and design community. Kate holds a Master’s degree in Furniture from California College of the Arts.
