An artist and an avid gardener/yoga enthusiast, the Mill Valley Cabin clients were looking to accommodate their growing retirement pursuits with spaces which would capture the imagination. The steeply sloping site which had long been their home offered seclusion and inspirational views within a wood of impressive pine trees. Dividing the programmatic needs into his-and-hers cabins allows the two small structures to be placed lightly between existing trees with minimal re-grading of the site and offers different views of the woods. Working with the landscape architect, the roof of the lower building is planted with a quilt-like garden designed by Jori Hook, Landscape Architect, for the artist to look down upon. The green roofs blend beautifully with the existing hillside and provide a canvas for the client’s love of gardening. The interiors of the studios are clean, simple and modern offering spaces for quiet reflection among the pine trees.
